Ascent Insights Edition 34

Welcome to Ascent Insights Edition 34.

July has proven a remarkably positive month for markets; the post-Brexit rebound has continued, while any concern about Donald Trump becoming the new US president has been put on hold while the Rio Olympics have taken centre stage.

The US, UK, Japanese and Australia markets all produced robust returns in July, with Japan leading the way with a 6.4% surge.

Emerging economies, however, have had mixed returns; the attempted coup in Turkey momentarily heightened concerns, however, calm and surety has since been restored. Brazil’s economic situation continues to be sour, yet for the past fortnight at least, little could detract from what has been a very impressive Olympic performance so far – The Australian Women’s Rugby 7s delighted fans, while Usain Bolt did what only Usain Bolt can do.

The mixed results from markets across the world highlight the benefits of a diversified-global portfolio approach.
